aos-11 | gewan fiber
Traditionally used as ties for ikat weaving in Sumba Island, Indonesia. They will take the fiber and split it into an appropriate width for each ikat pattern. Nowadays, plastic ties are more commonly used as it is cheaper, but Gewan is considered better. It tightens as it becomes wet in a dye bath. The resulting edge of the ikat pattern will be sharper. It also is gentler to the core fiber.
I personally love how light it is. It also makes a wonderful sound when it swishes in the air. Simply hang it in the window or on the terrace & listen to it when the wind goes through it. It will be wonderful for creating baskets, art, weavings... There are so many possibilities... (I have also found a photo of a back strap loom support made from this fiber!)
