weaving I - beginning weaving with linda labell

Starting on September 4th, 2007 for 10 weeks on every
TUESADAY night (It has been changed from Wednesday night. 7/23/2007)
6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
fee: $370 / material fee - $25 for the book
loom deposit $260 (will be returned at the end of the workshop)
class limit: 8 / level: no experience necessary

This workshop is to introduce you to a very tip of the great art of weaving. You will learn how to wind the yarn, dress the loom, weave basic plain/twill structures. You will also learn how to create a fabric with hand manipulated pick ups. In the end, you will have a scarf you have woven yourself! You will also experience many unique materials including bamboo, paper and silk stainless steel to work with. Takako from Habu will give a fiber talk one evening. There will be a trip to The Yarn Tree, Linda's shop. A dyeing workshop will be held at the shop that evening

ABOUT LINDA Linda LaBelle, weaver, knitter, costume designer, is also the owner of The Yarn Tree, her own weaving studio, teaching facility and also a retail store for weaving/knitting yarn and spinning & felting supplies, located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She has worked with various artists, including Matthew Barney, who recently had a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, creating/designing costumes for their projects.

Lace Sampler Workshop with Cheryl Oberle

10 am to 4 pm
fee: $95 / material - Yarn will be provided free. You must bring the needles and other small tools (list will be provided when you sign up.)
class limit: 13 / level: Basic skills are required, but knitters of all levels are welcome.

Before there were pattern books, lace stitches were recorded in beautifully knit samplers that were passed from knitter to knitter. Spend a day learning to knit lace and begin your own heirloom sampler. You may choose to sample several patterns or to concentrate on advancing your skills and understanding of lace knitting.

Reading Japanese Patterns with Cheryl Oberle

class limit: 13 / level: Basic skills are required, but knitters of all levels are welcome.

The Japanese use a brilliant system for writing patterns that is both economical and efficient.Ý With a few tools the western knitter can learn to read these patterns and have access to the exceptional wealth of Japanese knit wear designs. This system is also a valuable aid to designers.Ý Come learn the ins and outs of Japanese patterns and open the doors to a whole new world of knitting ideas. At least intermediate knitting skills suggested but knitters of all levels are welcome.

ABOUT CHERYL A knitter since she was 4 years old! Cheryl Oberle is the author of Folk ShawlsÝand Folk Vests. Her designs have been published in Knitter's, Interweave Knits and Piecework magazines. She holds a B.A. in philosophy and psychology from the University of Denver, studied art and architecture at Harvard, and has done graduate work at Northwestern University. When she's not knitting, she can be found with her husband, Gary, enjoying the Colorado high country. She is currently working on her third book that is due to be published in the fall of 2008.
